Tim Kent became interested in photography aged fifteen taking photos initially of landscapes and seascapes and spending most evenings in the school darkroom experimenting with printing techniques. He went to Southend technical college, but left aged nineteen to become assistant to fashion photographer Chris Craymer. Tim was inspired by the portraits of Bill Brandt, Brian Griffin, Arthur Tress and Diane Arbus, this coupled with an interest in music led him to become a portrait photographer for the first eight years of his career. In 1997 Tim had an exhibition of portraits of some of the most influential dance and electronic musicians of the time. The exhibition was first shown at the Levi gallery in London followed by the Melkweg in Amsterdam and other galleries across Europe.
In early 1998 Tim was commissioned to shoot his first automotive assignment – a cover story for Car magazine, this led to similar assignments for magazines and journals all over the world and quickly led on to commercial advertising commissions. Tim is based in London and represented in four countries making regular trips to Europe and America shooting campaigns for clients including Mini, Lexus, Nissan, Chevrolet and Greyhound. In addition to car photography Tim has just shot a seventy image pictorial biography chronicling the gothic adventures of the fictional ‘Duke of Camberwell’ which is intended to be somewhere between a commercial portfolio and an art project. Future plans involve more creative personal projects and collaboration in CG imagery to further his diversity in automotive image making.
